Yeah exactly. I was just listening to a podcast yesterday where the devs mentioned that they get requests for encryption a lot and they just don't understand why. They were like, "why not lock your whole computer?" and "if somebody's snooping in your Evernote they could just as easily be reading your email or stealing your credit card numbers."

That's kind of the philosophy I use with my computer. If I step away from it, I lock the screen. Really important stuff, like account numbers, are encrypted in 1Password, and files are in encrypted disk images. Everything that I use on a regular basis is unencrypted for ease of use and speed, on the theory that if someone who's not me is using my computer, something is already very wrong. When people are like, "Can I just check my email?" I cringe. But I'm not as worried about somebody else snooping in my Evernote. I'm going to be using it a lot at work and I don't want private stuff coming up when I'M using Evernote, unless I specifically want it to, and I don't want my OS indexing it either. But I DO want it indexing all the non-private stuff, which is why the differentiation between private and not-private has to be made in Evernote, and not through built-in OS functions.

Anyway, I'm really liking it for the most part. I'm working on a more thorough review, and specifically an article about use cases I've found interesting.

Hmm. So you're thinking of something along the lines of where you have your own private notebook and other less private notebooks. And when you search, you don't want it to find entries from your private notebook?

I still haven't found a real use for evernote. I mostly use Linux, so I've only used the windows app once or twice, so I'm not really sure what that's like. I'm just going off what I've done using the website.

You're right about the SSL support, but that's not my primary concern. No local security is my issue. If I'm going to be using the app extensively at work and elsewhere, I wouldn't want my personal diary-type posts being just as easily accessible and searchable as my work stuff. It would be nice if it had that, as then I could dump MacJournal, but that's just me trying to be overly efficient.

I'm going to try the sharing features on my show. You have to join premium for others to be able to edit your notes, and they can only be shared online for now (this is a feature they're working on apparently), but it might help us a bit. It seems like it might be a simpler but easier implementation of how I wanted to use Wave. I'm not sure if sharees can add their own notes to the notebook, though. That would be helpful to be able to have an assistant working independently on a project able to add their own content, not just add on to my notes.

So Evernote doesn't really seem to solve a problem for me. I've used it and I still use it occasionally, but not that much. I'll have a random tidbit from a website - some text or an image or something that I want to save for later and I'll throw it in a note.

I could also see being able to share notebooks being useful if you're collaborating with someone on something.

On the security side - they claim the premium version enables SSL support so at least your connection to their server in encrypted. But I don't think they do anything to protect data at rest.
