useful links
Computery-Type Links
- TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) Major site for Apple news.
- The iPhone Blog Self-explanatory. Blog. iPhone. Decent forums, too, and a really good podcast.
- Engadget Pretty much the biggest blog for general tech news. So big it's a little overwhelming. They also have a couple sub-blogs, such as Engadget Mobile, which will tell you more about mobile phones than you could ever possibly want to know. Their huge readership also results in lots of comments on the posts, which can be equally informative or amusing.
- MacNN Mac News Network is an OK site for news, but what I have always used it for is its excellent forums, which are filled with lots of knowledgable people. In recent years it's dropped off my list of sites I visit every day, and it seems to have slowed down, but it's still the place I look when I have a problem to see if others have reported the same thing (when Apple's support forums are no help).
- AppAdvice I have just recently discovered this site, which offers reviews and lists of cool iPhone apps. If you're overwhelmed by the tens of thousands of apps, I have found this site helpful for weeding through all the new releases and finding out about new apps that are actually good and useful.
Theatre Links
- Playbill The original theatre website. So old it used to be called Playbill Online, back when my mom would ask what I was doing, and I'd be like, "I was online," and she'd be like, "on line for what?" But anyway, pretty much the default site for mainstream news, grosses, and feature articles.
- Talkin Broadway / All that Chat The place to go for bitchy gossip. Find out what the word of mouth is on everything, halfway through the invited dress! Try to guess who on your production team is secretly shilling for your show!
- BroadwayWorld News, interviews, opening night photos and that kind of thing. Generally more multimedia content than Playbill, and they have a very active forum.
- The Broadway Show League Whether you are a spectator or a player, the offical site of the Show League has the schedules, results and standings for the theatre industry's own softball league. I play 2nd base for Phantom, but due to my summer stock job and other work, I'm almost never there in recent seasons.
- Nick Tochelli's Blog Not on the scale of the above sites, but I must give a plug to Nick. He was my assistant on The Acting Company 2009 tour, and we both blogged frequently about our experiences. Somehow he became the blogging superstar. When we were in rehearsal at the Guthrie they put a link to his blog on their front page! Our leading actor's dad came to see the show in Pennsylvania, and never mind seeing his son perform King Henry, he wanted to meet Nick! Now that we're gearing up for another tour, his blog is getting more active as well. If you're reading my tour blog posts, his posts will fill in some gaps and provide another perspective on our touring experience.
- Official Site of Cherie B. Tay Cherie is a stage manager that I came into contact with during the preview of Google Wave, where we were basically the only two people talking about stage management. She has a website along the same lines as this one with links, pictures of her prompt books, paperwork, and photos.
Web Development
Not really the point of this site, but as a self-taught web developer, I have found these sites to be very helpful.- ColourLovers A great resource for exploring colors and complimentary palettes for use on your site.
- When Can I Use... Really cool web-based tool that tells you what web standards are supported by certain browsers, and how far back into old versions the support goes. So if you're worried about using some newfangled code, it will show you exactly which versions of browsers it will or won't work on.
- Wordpress Codex Good basic resource for working with Wordpress blogs.
